Onion rice recipe explained with step by step pictures and a video. Onion or eerulli rice is a very easy and quick rice bath recipe that can be served as a breakfast, a light dinner or can be packed for the lunch box. Onion rice is prepared using cooked rice, onion, rasam powder, salt, tamarind, jaggery, curry leaves, mustard, cumin, turmeric and coriander leaves.

You can find very tasty onion rasam recipe on this website, which is also very easy and simple to prepare.

I have added tamarind and jaggery in this recipe. But both of these ingredients are optional and can be adjusted as per your taste. We can prepare this onion rice recipe using leftover rice.

Onion rice recipe

Preparation time: 10 min
Cooking time: 30 min
Serves: 3

Ingredients: (measuring cup used = 240ml)

  1. 1/2 cup raw rice (I have used sona masuri)
  2. 2 tbsp cooking oil
  3. 1/2 tsp mustard seeds
  4. 1/2 tsp cumin seeds
  5. 7 - 8 curry leaves
  6. 1 large onion finely chopped
  7. 1/4 tsp turmeric powder
  8. 1 tbsp rasam powder
  9. 2 tbsp coriander leaves
  10. Tamarind as per taste
  11. Jaggery as per taste
  12. Salt as per your taste

Instructions for making onion rice recipe:

  1. To begin with cook the rice and keep it aside. Make sure the rice is cooked well but not mushy. You can use leftover rice as well.cooked rice for onion rice or eerulli rice bath recipe
  2. Slice the onions. Make it very thin or you can chop it finely.sliced onion for onion rice or eerulli rice bath recipe
  3. Next heat oil in a frying pan. Add in add in mustard seeds and cumin seeds. wait until mustard seeds start to splutter.tempering for onion rice or eerulli rice bath recipe

  5. Also add in sliced chopped onion. Fry until onions are soft and cooked.onion for onion rice or eerulli rice bath recipe
