Kadle sukka or chana sukka recipe explained with step by step pictures and a video. Kadale kaalu sukka is a tasty and healthy snacks prepared using black chickpeas. Kadale kaalu or kadalekalu sukka is a popular recipe from Mangalore region of Karnataka. Sonay or soney sukka can be served with rice or chapati or roti.

This mangalorean dish kadle sukka or sonay suke or soney sukka is very commonly prepared by Konkani communities. In this recipe, we need to soak the chickpeas for 7 - 8 hours, and cook it well until soft.

Kadle sukka can be served like a snack or a side dish. Adjust the salt, sweet and sour level as per your taste and how you are serving it.

Kadle sukka recipe

Preparation time: 8 hours
Cooking time: 45 min
Serves: 4

Ingredients: (measuring cup used = 240ml)

  1. 1 cup black chickpeas or Kadle or chana
  2. 1/2 tsp mustard seeds
  3. 7 - 8 curry leaves
  4. 4 - 5 cloves of garlic
  5. 1 medium sized onion
  6. A big pinch of turmeric powder
  7. 1 - 2 tsp jaggery (optional)
  8. 1 Gooseberry sized tamarind
  9. Salt as per your taste
  10. 2 tbsp oil

Ingredients for masala:

  1. 3 - 5 red chillies
  2. 2 tsp coriander seeds
  3. 1/2 tsp cumin seeds
  4. Big pinch of methi seeds
  5. Big pinch of mustard seeds
  6. Small piece cinnamon
  7. 3 - 4 cloves
  8. 4 - 5 cloves of garlic
  9. 1 medium sized onion
  10. 1/2 cup grated coconut

Instructions for making kadle sukka:

  1. Soak the black chickpeas for 7 - 8 hours.soak black chikpeas for kadle sukka or chana sukka recipe
  2. Take soaked chickpeas in a pressure cooker. Add salt and water as required.soaked black chikpeas for kadle sukka or chana sukka recipe
  3. Cook the chickpeas until soft by making 4 - 5 whistles.cooking black chikpeas for kadle sukka or chana sukka recipe
  4. Now to prepare the masala, heat 1 tsp oil in a pan and fry the red chillies.red chillies for kadle sukka or chana sukka recipe
  5. Add coriander seeds, cumin seeds, methi seeds and mustard seeds. Fry under low flame until mustard seeds splutter.spices for kadle sukka or chana sukka recipe
  6. Add cinnamon and cloves.spices for kadle sukka or chana sukka recipe
  7. Add peeled and chopped garlic.garlic for kadle sukka or chana sukka recipe
  8. Add chopped onion and fry until onions turn slightly brown.onion for kadle sukka or chana sukka recipe
  9. Add grated coconut and fry for a minute. Switch off the stove.coconut for kadle sukka or chana sukka recipe
  10. Transfer the fried ingredients into a mixie jar. Grind it by adding required water.fried spices for kadle sukka or chana sukka recipe
  11. Next, in a frying pan prepare tempering using oil, mustard seeds, curry leaves and garlic.tempering for kadle sukka or chana sukka recipe
  12. Add chopped onion and fry until soft.onion for kadle sukka or chana sukka recipe
  13. Add the ground masala. Stir and cook until thick.masala for kadle sukka or chana sukka recipe
